In a spot trade you exchange one asset for another and own the result. Buy Bitcoin on the spot market and the Bitcoin is yours: you can withdraw it, hold it indefinitely, and nothing can force you out of the position. There is no expiry, no funding cost and no liquidation price.
That is the distinction from derivatives, where you trade a contract that tracks the price without ever holding the asset. Spot markets are where the underlying price is discovered, which is why derivatives reference them, and spot volume is generally treated as the more meaningful measure of real demand.
What is the difference between spot and futures trading?
Spot means you own the asset outright with no expiry or liquidation risk. Futures are contracts tracking the price, usually traded with leverage, where the position can be closed out against you if the market moves far enough.
