What is a token burn?

Permanently removing tokens from circulation by sending them to an unspendable address.

A burn destroys supply verifiably: the tokens are sent somewhere with no known private key, so anyone can confirm on-chain that they can never move again. Projects burn tokens to reduce supply, sometimes as a one-off event and sometimes as a continuous mechanism funded by protocol revenue or built into transaction fees.

The effect on price is a matter of arithmetic and demand, not of the announcement. Burning a share of supply raises the value of each remaining unit only if demand holds; a burn funded by fees is a genuine transfer of value to holders, while a burn of tokens the project was never going to sell changes the reported supply figure more than it changes anything else.

Does burning tokens make the price go up?

Only insofar as it reduces supply against steady demand. Burning tokens that were locked or unissued has little real effect, whereas a burn funded by revenue removes supply the market would otherwise have absorbed.
