An exchange account is a custodial wallet. The balance shown is the provider's record of what it owes you; the keys, and the assets they control, are theirs to manage. This is what makes password resets, customer support and fast internal transfers possible, and it is the arrangement most people start with.
It also means the assets depend on the custodian remaining solvent, honest and operational. Accounts can be frozen, withdrawals suspended, and in an insolvency customers become creditors — a sequence that has played out repeatedly in this sector. The distinction is usually put as: not your keys, not your coins.
Is it safe to leave crypto on an exchange?
It exposes you to that exchange's solvency and security rather than to your own key management. It is reasonable for amounts you are actively trading and a larger risk for long-term holdings.
