What is a private key?

The secret number that authorises spending from a blockchain address.

A private key is a very large random number. From it, a public address is derived one way, so the address can be shared freely while the key cannot be worked backward from it. Signing a transaction with the key proves the right to spend without ever revealing the key itself.

Control of the key is control of the funds — completely and with no appeal. There is no account recovery, no administrator and no way to reverse a transaction signed by someone who obtained it. This is why a private key or seed phrase must never be typed into a website, shared with support staff, or photographed onto a device that syncs to the cloud.

Can a private key be recovered if lost?

No. The key is not stored anywhere that can reissue it, and the number space is far too large to search. Losing it, and any backup of it, makes the funds permanently inaccessible.
