What is trading volume?

The total value of an asset traded over a period, usually quoted over the last 24 hours.

Volume measures activity rather than direction. It is the sum of everything bought and sold across the venues being tracked, and it rises with attention: news, a sharp price move, a new exchange listing. A price move on heavy volume reflects a broad change of opinion; the same move on thin volume can be a single large order pushing through an empty book.

Volume figures vary between data providers because each one tracks a different set of venues and treats wash trading differently. Comparing an asset's volume to its own recent average is more reliable than comparing the absolute number between two sites, and the ratio of volume to market cap is a quick read on how actively an asset changes hands.

What does it mean when volume spikes but price barely moves?

Buyers and sellers are trading heavily at roughly the same valuation — often a sign of distribution or accumulation, where large positions change hands without either side having to move the price to get filled.
