Volatility measures the size of price fluctuations over a period, usually as the standard deviation of returns. It says nothing about which way the price is going — a sharp rally and a sharp crash are equally volatile. Crypto's is high by the standards of most asset classes, which is the same fact behind both its returns and its losses.
It matters operationally, not just descriptively. Position sizes that are reasonable in a quiet market are not in a volatile one, because the same allocation now implies a much wider range of outcomes. High volatility also brings liquidation levels closer for leveraged positions and widens spreads at exactly the moment orders most need to be filled.
Why is crypto more volatile than stocks?
Markets are younger and thinner, much of the trading is leveraged, there is no circuit breaker or closing bell, and valuations rest less on cash flows than on expectations — so opinions reprice faster and with less resistance.
